In the comments of a recent post, one of my readers mentioned the mint that was exploding out of her garden. It reminded me of this post and what fun it was!
On a recent trip to my local nursery I found these unique varieties of mint! I planted them in a terra cotta bowl and labeled them with copper plant markers, to keep track of the different varieties. As I was planting and rustling the leaves of the mint, it smelled wonderful in the air and my hands smelled so fresh.
The chocolate mint has a strong sent of mint with just a hint of chocolate and it is delicious sprinkled over some freshly chopped strawberries. The apple mint is a little more subtle and tastes delicious in a glass of ice water. Crush a few leaves between your fingers and drop them in the water, then swirl it around a bit. It makes a great summer afternoon treat. The sweet mint is wonderful dropped into a glass of strong black sun tea. You can also make mint ice cubes as a fun addition to your summer party beverages.
I just love the way it looks when different varieties of the same herb or flower are all planted together. Have you ever done that? What are your favorite plant mixes?
This post is part of the katienormalgirl.com revisited series. I recently switched platforms and I’m bringing some of the old blog bits with me. Whether it’s new to you, or if you’ve seen it before, I hope you enjoy!
I love chocolate mint. We originally planted it in our garden borders as a an attempt to repel moles. Even though it tends to wander through the bed, I don’t mind, as it’s fairly easy to keep in check by yoinking the new runners while I’m doing my usual rounds of weeding. The scent is fantastic on a warm day, or whenever we happen to brush by it.
I didn’t realize mint would help deter moles, very cool. I’m forever clipping the little runners off, then dipping them in some Root Tone and shoving them back in the bowl. They root great!
I’m in agreement – I love chocolate mint too, though I’m more of a forager than a gardener, so I actually love how mint spreads 🙂
I can’t wait until I have a garden where I can let some of my plants grow free! I have a tiny back porch right now and everything is in pots. Some day! 🙂
Haha! Its true, its exploding. I love chocolate mint but right now my favorite is orange mint. has a delicious citrusy smell and flavor.
There’s an orange mint?! I’ve never heard of it, that sounds wonderful!
Mint with chocolate? Hmmm 🙂 our area is underdeveloped in that sence. I’d never even heard of that. Pretty bowl..! 😀 Looks professional hehe.
It was only something that I had found recently. I was just told that there is such a thing as orange mint, too! So cool.
